This week, FIDIC is proudly supporting the World Engineering Day for Sustainable Development taking place on Wednesday 4 March 2020 and we would urge all our member associations (MAs) to support this important awareness-raising initiative.

The day is a new annual celebration highlighting the achievements of engineers and engineering in our modern world and is designed to improve public understanding of how engineering and technology is central to modern life and sustainable development. It came about after UNESCO approved a proposal from the World Federation of Engineering Organizations (WFEO) to hold a World Engineering Day on 4 March 2020.

The day also provides an opportunity to celebrate the important contributions of engineers and engineering to sustainable development and modern life and we would strongly urge all FIDIC MAs to support it.

FIDIC is delighted to be supporting the first World Engineering Day for Sustainable Development. An international day with coordinated celebrations across the world is a brilliant opportunity to increase the profile of engineering. The day is also an opportunity to engage with government and industry to address the need for engineering capacity and the quality of engineers around the world and develop strategic frameworks and best practices for the implementation of engineering solutions for sustainable development.

This World Engineering Day is also about promoting engineering as a career and how it is an opportunity to change the world for better. There is much to be done to achieve the UN Sustainable Development Goals in developing countries to ensure that everyone has access to clean water, sanitation, reliable energy, and other basic human needs and in all countries, there is also a great deal to be done to address the impacts of climate change, environmental issues, our growing cities and the challenges of new technologies.

The day presents FIDIC and Stakeholders with excellent opportunities to promote engineering and to particularly engage with young people and say: “If you want to change the world for the better, become an engineer.”
