Clifton Scannell Emerson Associates for Snugborough Interchange Upgrade

The winning project in this category delivers high quality infrastructure that has benefits for all users of the transportation systems including pedestrians, cyclist, public transport users and private and commercial road users. Using a multi-level solution in the design the Snugborough Interchange Upgrade designed by Clifton Scannell Emerson Associates is a successful resolution of a complex confluence where multiple users of all transportation modes and multiple services negotiate the crossing of the N3 and Tolka River between the Dublin Enterprise Zone, Blanchardstown Village, and the Blanchardstown Shopping Centre. The new interchange with three levels facilitates a high-quality greenway along the Tolka while also providing increased traffic capacity and bus priority for Bus-Connects on the N3.

Roughan & O’Donovan Consulting Engineers for Clontarf to City Centre Project

The winning project in this category has set a standard for urban road and active travel facility design in Ireland and for the implementation of the Bus-Connects programme.

The winning project is the Clontarf to City Centre Project, with designers Roughan & O’Donovan Consulting Engineers.

Into a complex network of over 20km combined length of pedestrian walkways, new and upgraded cycle lanes and upgraded bus lanes, the design of the scheme introduces, multiple new modal segregation features, environmental enhancements and construction techniques. By providing safe and attractive facilities for public transport users, cyclists and pedestrians, the innovative designs in the scheme contribute to encouraging a modal shift to active travel and public transport use in this very busy environment.

Mott MacDonald Ireland for N22 Baile Bhuirne to Macroom Road Development.

The N22 Baile Bhuirne to Macroom Road Development is a significant piece of national infrastructure. The project involved the construction of 22 km of dual carriageway on the N22 national primary route between Cork and Tralee, including four major river crossings and 108 structures. The consultant engineers were commissioned to act as Technical Advisor to Cork County Council to deliver this key civil infrastructure project for the south-west region. The completed project provides measurable benefits including accident reduction, reduced carbon emissions and a reduction in journey times. The submission demonstrates excellence in the delivery of a major civil engineering project. The project is an exemplar in this field of civil engineering and utilised new technologies for carbon benchmarking for the construction stage.

The North Runway and associated facilities were delivered on time and on budget at no cost to the Irish State. It will support the creation of 31,200 new jobs and €2.2 billion in additional economic activity. North Runway has been part of Dublin Airport’s long-term strategic planning and land-use prioritisation since the 1960s. The 3.1km runway includes 340,000m2 of runway and taxiway pavement, 6km of internal airport roads, 425km of electrical cables and 2,500 runway and taxiway lights. The project was highly complex in nature, providing modern methods of lighting and control incorporating energy efficient solutions. An ambitious earthworks balance was achieved which reduced the environmental impact of the works.

The project is a 400,000 PE upgrade of Ringsend WwTP using innovative Aerobic Activated Sludge (AGS) technology. The AGS system avoided the need for a 9km long sea outfall thus saving close to €1billion in public funds. It includes a 110m*36m*20m Main Reactor Block on piled foundations in poor ground and a 15m*10m*6m deep Expansion Lift Pump Station above buried structures. The upgrade treats 2,5000 l/s of high quality effluent. In addition to providing major environmental improvement to Dublin Bay, the project unleashes significant development potential in the Capital City.

The project involved the construction of a new Above Ground Installation (AGI), with trunk main realignments, designed to overcome a potential single point of failure on the national gas network. The scheme included the construction of a new AGI and the rerouting of existing trunk gas mains to provide a more resilient national supply network. The Consulting Engineer reviewed 13 no. alternative sites along with multiple pipeline route alternatives. The works required step by step construction sequencing including live gas main ‘hot taps’ so as to avoid interruption to gas supplies. The scheme also included significant site environmental enhancements.

A 40 megalitre per day potable Water Treatment Plant replacing an older facility. The plant can be extended to 80 megalitre per day and currently provides water to over 70% of the City’s population. Site levels were raised significantly to prevent flooding by the river Lee with the scheme now protected against the 1 in 1,000 year flood event. The works included laying a connection to the Inniscarra Treatment Plant thus providing added resilience of supply. The Consulting Engineer had to overcome poor ground conditions, a restricted site, archaeology, and environmental impacts. (more…)
